SES-D-101 — Medium-Voltage Cable Joints

Revision 4 · Effective 2025-08-01 · Domain: Distribution

1. Scope

This standard specifies design, material, performance, testing, and installation requirements for medium-voltage cable joints rated 6kV through 36kV used in Saudi Energy distribution networks.

2. Normative references

  • IEC 60502-2 — Power cables with extruded insulation
  • IEC 61442 — Test methods for accessories
  • SES-D-074 — LV Earthing Practices

3. Conductor requirements

Cable joints shall be compatible with both stranded and compacted copper conductors that conform to IEC 60228, Class 2.

3.2.1 Conductor cross-section

Cable joints shall accommodate copper conductors from 25 mm² to 630 mm² per IEC 60502-2, Table 4.

3.2.2 Material

Connector bodies shall be of high-conductivity copper alloy with electroplated tin or nickel finish.

4. Testing

4.1 Partial discharge

Partial discharge testing shall be performed at 1.73 × Uo with a maximum permissible level of 5 pC.

4.3.2 Mechanical pull test

Joints must withstand a longitudinal pull of 30 N/mm² of conductor area for 1 hour without conductor pull-out, splice slippage, or visible deformation.

1 active waiver — WV-2026-0142

5. Marking and identification

Each joint shall be permanently marked with manufacturer code, voltage rating, batch number, and date of manufacture in accordance with the SEC marking guideline MG-2024.
